Plumber Support Manager Profile: Joe Ervin

Joe started his plumbing career 40 years ago working for a rep agency, then he joined his family's plumbing business, served his apprenticeship and started his own company. He's been with Rheem for 4½ years and enjoys helping plumbers in need of support and education on the newest technology in water heating.

Today’s Plumber Support Manager spotlight is Joe Ervin, PSM for the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Region which includes PA, NJ, DE, MD, DC and VA. Joe is based out of Philadelphia, PA.

Joe grew up in Philadelphia and was in the plumbing industry from an early age, around his family’s plumbing business. He got his start in the industry 40 years ago working for a rep agency before joining the family plumbing business. He later started his own plumbing company, Ervin Plumbing, which he operated for 24 years before closing up and joining Rheem.

Joe has been with Rheem for 4½ years and specializes in water heating and radiant heat. He enjoys helping plumbers learn about water heating technologies and grow their businesses.

Q: Why did you get into plumbing?

A: Being around plumbing my whole life, I started my career working for a rep agency in Philadelphia. I worked for a wholesale distributor for 3 years before joining the family business. After serving my apprenticeship, I tested for my masters and broke off to start my own business.

Q: What did you like most about being a plumber?

A: I liked the interaction with customers and other tradespeople on jobs. I also liked the instant gratification of solving problems and seeing a job come to completion.

Q: What do you like most about your role at Rheem?

A: I like being able to stay connected with the trade and the relationships I’ve developed over the years. I like being able to help a plumber in need.

Q: What was your favorite memory of a time you helped your customers?

A: Holidays come to mind. It seemed that someone always panicked due to an issue when expecting a house full of people. Taking the worry out of the situation was always rewarding.

Q: What was one of your proudest moments as a plumber?

A: I was asked to consider teaching first-year theory at my local Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors (PHCC) School, and with some reluctance I agreed. This was the most rewarding experience of my career. I got so much more than I expected in return. It’s hard to explain but the emotional reward of watching my students graduate is something that I’ll always treasure.
